Marty;
Thanks for the update, what years did the Wood brothers work the beach? I have a couple of Reggie Jones's crew photos from West End Two with Joe Wood, and my Dad Edwin Rooney worked a little at West End One for Pete Messbauer. Were you at Field One during the Stu Miller years?
Drop me a line at and we can add your contact info

Feel free to add your names of Friends, Relatives, and Family members. The Alumni committee is constantly updating the LIST and searching for former guards or family members of Original Guards from the first season of 1929 and the 1930's and 1940's. Any photos you might have from early crews, races, partys, or Shipwrecks would be greatly appreciated. We are working hard to preserve our History and recognize those individuals who really demonstrated by their actions what being a Jones Beach Lifeguard was all about. From the first Captain William Johns who was a Lifeguard with over 20 years experiance when he helped form the Corps to Bill Mullahey who was a direct link to the early surfriders of Duk Kahanamoku and Waikiki Beach Hawaii and brought the organization he learned about from Jones Beach to help found the Waikiki Beach patrol in 1936. We recently honored our own Reggie Jones a member of the Corps for 64 years from 1944 till 2007 who has worked every beach covered by our guards and was able to pass our rigorous rehire procedure at 80 years old! Please feel free to contact us here at the site and share your stories and names of our pioneer lifeguards.

James;
I think I was in touch with another Nekton relative Roger. I have a newspaper clipping I got from Sylvester Granrose's son John showing the early Jones Beach lifeguard Lieutenants James Kearns, Armas Nekton, and Sylvester Granrose along with the original Jones Beach lifeguard Captain William Carl Johns.
