The Fort Lauderdale Air Show May Be the World’s Largest Lifeguarded Event!
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Fort Lauderdale’s Air Show is not only the largest, most well-attended event of its kind, but it is considered by some to be the largest spectator event of any kind. The event, billed as a salute to the U.S. Military featuring world-class military and civilian aircraft, along with ocean and beach entertainment activities, may also be the single largest ocean-lifeguarded event anywhere in the world. With an estimated 3 million spectators in attendance (eight times the number of Woodstock), most of which swim in the ocean, it takes a virtual army of dedicated ocean lifeguards to make sure that every person leaves the beach safely.
Because of the event’s enormity, and the tremendous responsibility placed on Fort Lauderdale Ocean Rescue to ensure its continued success, the beach patrol recruits water-safety professionals from all over the country (and Canada) to keep the Air Show’s unblemished safety record intact. In the Air Show’s 20-year history in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, there has never been a drowning or fatal ocean-related injury. At the last Air Show, 80 lifeguards from areas ranging from Los Angeles, California to Cape Cod, Massachusetts to Chicago, Illinois were called in to augment Fort Lauderdale’s 90-lifeguard patrol. Broken down, that comes down to about 15,000 beach patrons per lifeguard on duty. Here is a look at some more of the numbers:
Event Averages: Attendance: 3 million.
Televised: 8 languages in 49 countries.
Spectator Boats: Nearly 10,000 spread over a 1 x 7 mile-wide swath of ocean.
Arrests: 15.
ID Bands Handed Out To Kids: 55,000.
Missing Kids: 105 Reported (all were reunited with parents or guardians).
Minor First Aids: 467.
Major First-Aids Requiring Transport: 20.
Rescues: 100.
Preventative Actions: 10,000.
The U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds will headline the Lauderdale Air Show, May 6th and 7th over the ocean on Fort Lauderdale Beach. A four hour line up of some of the nation’s premier military and civilian acts will return the thrill, inspiration and patriotism of a waterfront air show to South Florida!
Fort Lauderdale Ocean Rescue's involvement in the Air Show over the last 20 years has been wrought with many positive experiences for our lifeguard staff. Although this event entails a great deal of coordination and hard work, many on our patrol are glad to be involved in this unique event. We feel that this event builds bridges and friendships, and gives us the opportunity to share rescue techniques and swap stories with lifesavers from all over the continent. We have had lifeguards work the Air Show from California, Maine, Texas, Illinois, Massachusetts, South and North Carolina, Virginia, Ohio and Canada, and have also used these event lifeguards as a source of future year-round employees. This event also gives us the opportunity to mandate additional training for our year-round staff in preparation for a host of possible scenarios that an event of this magnitude may present. We do extra training in under-water search and recovery, cervical-spine injuries and back boarding, lost and found children detection and recovery, radio communications, and multiple-victim incident triage and treatment drills.
Additionally, the Air Show gives our staff a heightened level of teamwork and camaraderie. Because of the volume of emergencies and shear mass of people in attendance, all ocean rescue lifeguards need and expect a certain level of solidarity and back up in regard to each rescue or emergency first aid they encounter. Public safety has been increased every year that we have been involved with this event. Because of the tremendous number of lifeguard event-workers from other agencies that help us out during the show, we have been able to increase the number of lifeguard towers, and the concentration of towers in the central area. We also bring in extra rescue boards, kayaks, P.W.C.s, rescue tubes and cans, back boards and first aid supplies to ensure that every lifeguard has all the tools to perform his/her job to its utmost effectiveness.
As we approach this year’s event, we once again reach out to the ocean lifesaving community for assistance in keeping this event as safe as possible. This year’s show is slated to be Saturday, May 6th and Sunday, May 7th.
Please contact our Event Employment Coordinator, Crystal Haire at: CHaire@fortlauderdale.gov, if you are interested in working either one or both of the days of the show (9am – 6pm @ $17.27 per hour – shirt, cap, whistle and parking pass provided).
Even if you have worked the event before, you may not be on the payroll, so it is necessary for you to re-apply. If you have not worked the event before or know of any other lifeguards who would like to work the show, please respond to this letter with your mailing address so we can send out applications. Thank you in advance for your help with our event.
