JBLC 2015 TUNNEL TO TOWERS EVENT

This is an OPEN INVITATION to all members, their families and friends to join the JONES BEACH LIFEGUARD TEAM and participate in the 2015 Tunnel to Towers 5K Run/Jog/Walk to be held on Sunday, September 27th. This event, which draws more than 25,000 people is conducted each year in honor of New York Fireman Stephen Siller and all those who perished on 9/11. Since then this event has grown to become a major nationwide initiative to provide financial assistance to the Wounded Warrior Project. The route retraces NY Fireman Stephen Siller’s run to the World Trade Center through the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel and finishes in the shadow of the new Freedom Tower where there is a free music concert, free food and an experience you will never forget.

To register for the event you need to go online to www.crowdrise.com/t2tnyc and follow the instructions. First, you should click on the registration icon so that you can officially register for the event. All information related to the event (history, route, directions, other links, etc.) will be found on this site. Second, once you complete registering you should go back to the original site as indicated above and click on the icon that reads “join a fundraising team”. In the tool bar that is displayed type in Jones Beach Lifeguard Corps and click on the search icon. You will then be on the JBLC fundraising page. Should you wish to donate to the Tunnel to Towers fundraising effort (minimum $10) the your donation will be registered and your name will officially appear on the team list.

Lastly, plans for a group fundraising event are being finalized for a date in the near future. Like last year the event will be held at the Scuttlebutt Tavern in Wantagh. More information will be forthcoming in the next few days in regard to this event. As you will recall commemorative JBLC TUNNEL TO TOWERS T-SHIRTS will be sold for $20 ( these shirts will be worn at the Run to show our solidarity for this cause) and food/drinks will also be available for purchase. We will also have a 50/50 contest to further our fundraising efforts. All proceeds from the afternoon will be donated to the Tunnel to Towers foundation in the name of the Jones Beach Lifeguard Corps. While we will never forget our brothers who were lost on 9/11 we also want this event to be dedicated each year to a member of the Corps who has passed on since then. For the 2014 Tunnel to Towers Run we honored the memory of Brother Chad T. Lundwall JBLC/FDNY. This year, for the 2015 Tunnel to Towers Run the Jones Beach Lifeguard Corps will participate in honor of our JBLC Brother, Lt. Matthew Lynch USMC. Prior to enlisting in the United States Marines, Matthew Lynch served as a lifeguard at Jones Beach from 1995 to 2001. Matthew distinguished himself numerous times during his three tours of duty in Iraq……the third of which was voluntary duty. Tragically Matthew was killed in action by a roadside bomb on October 31, 2004. For all that Matthew represented and for all he accomplished as a man, student, athlete, lifeguard, son, and brother we honor him this year and include his name on our JBLC tee shirts along with the others who we honor this day. We will never forget!

Come join us, let’s demonstrate our compassion for those who were lost, assist those who have defended our way of life, and participate together in the tradition of the JONES BEACH LIFEGUARD CORPS. LAST YEAR WE HAD OVER FORTY PEOPLE PARTICIPATE AND RAISED OVER $3,000……IF EVERYBODY BROUGHT A FRIEND AND MORE OF OUR CORPS JOIN IN WHO KNOWS WHERE WE COULD GO THIS YEAR.
