Dear Madame Commissioner
URGENT
The Jones Beach Lifeguard Corps. and the N.Y.S. Lifeguard Corps would like to take this opportunity to commend you on your insight of the full time opening of Robert Moses Field #4. at Robert Moses State Park. The positive results of your initial decision was felt immediately. The RM4 field filled up this past weekend and it's positive impact created a safer and more positive experience from the beachfront to the bathrooms. However, with the reversal of this decision to close a 2,500 car capacity lot, and to herd the public into the remaining three parking fields is a mistake. It will create an uncomfortable, unhealthy and unsafe condition for all employees and patrons alike. In the past with this large parking lot at RM4 open it was evident that the public was able to avail themselves of the entire park, not just a reduced portion. Your initial observations and decision to open parking lot RM4 full-time were correct. The proof of that initial decision resulted last weekend with park wide success. The beachfront's at parking lots RM5, RM3 and RM2 were less overcrowded. This preseason crowd was indicative of a midsummer midweek attendance. It's positive impact was felt at the concession, showers and bathrooms. This facilitated a better experience for our visitors, less lines , less overcrowding. As the summer fast approaches and the hot weather settles in the result will create more visitors and huge bathing crowds. It is obvious that the need for all beaches to be open is critical.
We are also concerned with the closure at Jones Beach State of West End 2 Beach to bathers. This is one of the most pristine beaches on the East Coast which has been used and enjoyed by generations of New York State tax payers, and people from all over the United States as well as the world.
The summer season is short and with the erosion of beachfront access is limited. We
know the state of New York takes pride in giving the public the best beach experience possible. This pride is evident from the expansive marketing program that is ongoing for state parks.
WE NEED TO OPEN THE BEACHES. Please reconsider your decision of June 9th to close1/4 of Robert Moses State Park and open RM4 full time. This is the time the public needs their parks most.
The Jones Beach Lifeguard Corps. in conjunction the New York State Lifeguard Corps are
officially stating their concerns; BEACH CLOSURES ARE UNSAFE.
Please do what is nessary and respond to this urgent matter as soon as possible.
Respectfully
Robert Cornacchia President Jones Beach Lifeguard Corps.
Bruce Meirowitz President New York State Lifeguard Corps.
***con't from above
If we work together now and over the winter, we may be able to help guide New York State into providing a safe and enjoyable environment that the tax payers of this state deserve
