Ocala - John Douglas Anderson, M.D. passed away on Sunday September 11, 2011 at Ocala Regional Medical Center, Ocala, Florida. Dr. Anderson was born in New York City, N.Y., on April 21, 1948, to Carl and Frances Anderson. John grew up on Long Island, N.Y. and graduated from West Islip High School in 1966, completing his studies and lettering in track, lacrosse and swimming. During the summers, John worked as an ocean lifeguard at Robert Moses State Park. After completing his B.S. at Rutgers University, a B.S. from the University
of Rhode Island and an M.S. from the State University at Stony Brook, John worked as a marine biologist for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Always wanting to be a physician, John returned to school and graduated from St. George's Medical School and completed his fellowship in Gastroenterology at St. Vincent's Hospital NYC. Dr. Anderson moved to Florida in the early 1990's and settled in Ocala 1996. John was an avid runner for the last 30 years, completing the Marine Corps Marathon in Washington D.C., the New York City and the Pensacola Marathon. On his sixtieth birthday, he completed the Boston Marathon. He is survived by brothers Ken and Robert, sister Carol, sister-in-law Margaret, nephews Mike and Carl, stepmother Virginia Franklin, stepbrother Brad Franklin and stepsister Terri Franklin. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Doctors Without Borders or the Salvation Army of Marion County. A Celebration of Life is planned for Friday 6:30 p.m. at the Ocala Country Club, 6823 SE 12th Circle, Ocala, FL 34480.
