Rest In Peace, Bob Bertrand I am saddened to inform you that long-time USLA New England Region President Robert (Bob) Bertrand has died of a heart attack at the age of 72.
Bob led the revival of the New England Region of the USLA after many years in which participation was very limited. He was known throughout the New England Region for his travels to all corners and his upbeat encouragement of all lifeguards to work collaboratively for the best outcomes.
Bob first became president of the region in 2010 and served until 2014 when he passed the torch to current New England Region President Jim Farrell.
The longest serving part of his lifeguard career was at Jones Beach, New York. He later did some lifeguard work at the Cape Cod National Seashore.
Bob was a member of the USLA National Certification Committee and wanted to see lifeguard agencies in New England become certified. He took a job overseeing a lifeguard operation on Cape Cod which became the first New England agency to be certified. Later, the Cape Cod town of Orleans hired him to oversee their lifeguard operations and they too became USLA certified. Since then, other New England lifeguard agencies have also become certified, many at Bob’s urging and with his support.
Bob was a retired American Airlines pilot who split his time between homes in Marson’s Mills, Massachusetts and Jupiter, Florida, where he swam almost every day and golfed almost as frequently.
Within the USLA Bob was a constant presence at biannual Board of Directors meetings and organized one of our most memorable meetings in Brewster, Massachusetts. He always brought a smile and a glint in his eye as he advocated for lifesaving and for his region.
Bob will be greatly missed. He is survived by his wife, Leona, to whom the USLA extends most sincere condolences.
