Enjoyed this weeks issue of the Bucket & Bouy, nice to know the 70 year old division in the National Tri's is so competitive.
What's going on with our pay raises though?
I was hoping to hear more on that. I know certain people will never forget that LISPC "over 35 year age" decree, but why isn't anything mentioned on Pay Rates?
Pay rates and a guarenteed 48 hour work week were the issues in 1963 when the union was formed. While we got the guarenteed work week, the LISPC dragged their feet on pay. Pay rates were the issue every year from 1963 through the Strike of 1971? The Strike of 1971 was over pay issues. The Strike of 1967 was over pay issues.
The over 35 year old issue was first raised in 1966 when about 20 to 30 guards were over that age. It was settled prior to 4th of July, and it was settled when the affected members accepted other jobs at a nice $1 an hour over the prevailing lifeguard rate, Captains pay at the time. It was raised again in 1968 and was settled in a similar fashion.
I realize Roy Lester didn't start lifeguarding till 1968, after the first strike that finally settled a five year battle to raise pay scales. We finally set up a step system with a nice raise for veteran guards after 3 years. Maybe the editor of the Bucket and Bouy should try and educate himself on the History of the Union, and the history of the negotiations for much needed benifits.
What I hear on the beach is pay rates are a top priority. What is our Executive Board doing to address that?
