Hello Fellow Guards,

Some of the guys know, but this is to inform you that Gerry Margolis passed away on Tuesday, AM, in LA. Gerry had struggled valiantly against an insidious and actually unknown disease that slowly and inexorably wasted away his muscle strength, beginning with his shoulders and emanating from there. It was a tough thing for a man who was an athlete, surfer, and lifeguard. I believe it was four years he fought against this, and he kept his courage and hope to the last. As you know, he was a guard for many, many years, primarily at Field # 2, JB. He was also the Lt. at East Bath House. Graduated from Harvard, and Fordam Law School, and was a successful and respected music and entertainment lawyer in LA for most of his professional career. He went in to his office and worked with dictation and speaker phone to the last. The final blow was when he succumbed to pneumonia. I knew him at the beach from the early sixties on, and being among the few old expatriate Jones Beach guys here in LA, we saw one another a few times a year and always reverted right back to the beach and the grand stories. He will be missed.

Gerald Margolis, an entertainment attorney who represented Robin Williams, R. Kelly, Mick Jagger and Keith Richards and others during his 30-year law career, died Sept. 15 at St. John's Medical Center in Santa Monica of complications relating to pneumonia. He was 65.

Margolis was a partner at Manatt, Phelps and Phillips and a key figure in building his firm's powerhouse music practice. He successfully tried such high-profile cases as Hulex Music v. Columbia Pictures, in which the plaintiff contended the title theme from the 1984 film "Ghost Busters" was deliberately copied from the song "I Want a New Drug" by Huey Lewis and the News, and Rege v. Williams, where he defended longtime client Williams in a product disparagement action brought against the comedian related to remarks he made on an HBO special.

Margolis also served as counsel to Kelly in a suit regarding the termination of the 2002 "Best of Both Worlds" tour and defended Jagger and Keith Richards in a case alleging copyright infringement by the Rolling Stones members relating to the song "Saint of Me" on the album "Bridges to Babylon."

Margolis, a graduate of Harvard University and Fordham Law School, was a faculty member of the USC Law School Entertainment Law Symposium and a lecturer with the Practicing Law Institute.

Margolis is survived by his wife, Cyndi; daughter, Jacey; brother, Jeffrey; and sister, Sara. An avid surfer in his day, Margolis will be cremated and his ashes spread at New York's Jones Beach, where he was head lifeguard for many years, and in Manhattan Beach in Southern California.

The family will hold a memorial service on Oct. 6 at 11 a.m. at Fox Studios' Darryl F. Zanuck Theater.
