While the beach was being built during the summer of 1929 a group of about a dozen lifeguards formed the Original Jones Beach Lifeguard Corps. Some of those names are as follows:

Captain William Carl Johns born in Berlin and a veteran of 15 years of lifeguarding, Coranado Beach CA, Honolulu HI, Miami Beach FL, Manhatten Beach NY, Atlantic City NJ.

Assistant Capt Sylvester "Wes" Granrose another veteran lifeguard and 1920 Olympian. Granrose was one of the first Lieutenants.

William Justin Mullahey who grew up surfing on the beach at Waikiki Hawaii and was attending Columbia University. He later became one of the early lieutenants.

George Clarke a swimmer from NYU and future Lieutenant.

Armas Nekton who was on the first Jones Beach competition team in 1931. Armas Nekton was a Lieutenant during the 1930 season.

James Kearns was another competitor on the 1931 original Jones Beach competition team , and was the 4th Lieutenant during the 1930 Lifeguard season.

Charles Haniquet who later became a Lieutenant.

Any one know any other early lifeguards from the 1930's?

By the opening of the East Bathhouse on August 4th, 1929 there were about 18 guards working. The following year there were about 35 lifeguards, and by 1931 the beach consisted of about 66 guards with 15 petty officers and a Captain and about 40 fulltime and 10 weekend lifeguards. One of them was Edward Francis Monroe, James "the prez" Monroe's father. Last edited by Guest on Sun Aug 03, 2008 5:16 pm, edited 2 times in total.

The mainstand wing stand feeder system was developed in those first years, by 1931 it was up and running with can bouys and reels of line. Boats were an integral part of it and surfboards were introduced in 1934 with the help of Bill Mullahey and his friend Tom Blake from Honolulu Hawaii. Check out the article I copied here in the History section under; "First 3 years of the JBLC".
