6 teams competed on this date for the annual Inter Beach races that had been renewed the year before in 1946 after the initial interbeach races started in 1937 and run till 1942 were suspended due to World War II.

The idea of competitions held at Jones Beach began when the Nassau Daily Review Star donated the Nassau Daily Review cup for an initial competition between Lifesaving Corps. The first Competition was held in 1931 in the newly opened West Bathhouse pool. Jones Beach won this initial cup and repeated as Champion in 1932 and 1933 retiring the trophy.

In 1934 Jones Beach travelled to Ocean City New Jersey to compete in what was billed as the National Lifesaving Championship. Jones Beach had won the title in 1933 at a tourney held in Jones Beach at the Central Mall, Zach's Bay and the West Bathhouse. In 1934 Ocean City narrowly defeated Jones Beach on their home field. After1934 the Jones Beach administration decide not to travel to competitions, and established an interbeach tradition that began in 1937.

1937 champion East Bathhouse
1938 champion East Bathhouse
1939 champion Central Mall
1940 champion Central Mall
1941 champion West Bathhouse
1942 champion West Bathhouse

In 1947 after the Inter Beach competition the West Bathhouse team was leading prior to monday nights events in the West Bath pool. Last edited by Guest on Wed Jul 30, 2008 3:24 pm, edited 2 times in total.

The ocean race that year was won by a rookie, Stu Miller representing the East Bathhouse. He beat out two veteran swimmers and NYAC teamates Ray Mullane of the Central Mall, and Tom McDermott of the West Bathhouse. I wonder who won the 3 lap medley swim that year?
