The Jones Beach Marine theatre opened with seating for 8,200 people. The first production was Michael Todd's version of "A Night in Venice" for the 1952 season. Guy Lombardo took over production of the Shows in 1954. Alot of lifeguards over the years worked at the shows as both lifeguards and various bit parts. Here is a rough year by year list of the productions. Other plays are "South Pacific", "Around the World in 80 days", and "Hit the deck". Let me know if anyone can identify the years, and any other stories of guards working the Show. (The Incredible Hulk?) 30 years of musical productions! 1952 - " Night in Venice" 1953 - "Night in Venice" 1954 - "Arabian Nights" 1955 - "Arabian Nights" 1956 - "Showboat" 1957 - "Showboat" 1958 - "Song of Norway" 1959 - " Song of Norway" 1960 - "Hit the Deck" 1961 - "Paradise Island" with Arthur Treacher 1962 - "Paradise Island" with Arthur Treacher 1963 - "Around the World in 80 days" 1964 - "Around the World in 80 days" 1965 - "Mardi Gras" with Louis Armstrong 1966 - "Mardi Gras" with Louis Armstrong 1967 - "Arabian Nights"" 1968 - "South Pacific" 1969 - "South Pacific" 1970 - "Sound of Music" 1971 - "Sound of Music" 1972 - "The King and I" 1973 - "Carousel" 1974 - "Fidler on the Roof" 1975 - "Oklahoma" 1976 - "Showboat" 1977 - "Finians Rainbow" last to be done by Guy Lombardo 1978 - "Annie get your Gun" 1979 - "Oklahoma" 1980 - "The Sound of Music" 1981 - "Damn Yankees"

Anyone remember Paradise Island? I was reading in the book Waikiki Beachboys that David Kahanamoku made a big rescue that summer @ Jones Beach. Does Reggie remember?

Jim, I think 75 and 76 were "Oklahoma". I recall vividly that insufferable "OOOOOOOOO-kla- homa!" promotion they blared on the PA system every 20 minutes. I was at WBH, and it drove us all ca-razy. It wasn't as bad on crowded days, because the crowd noise dampened it. But on northwind days during the week when the crowd was small, it was like the speakers were right behind the stand.
One of our boatswains, Lance Corey, went to Admin. to see if we could get a respite. Once they found that we hated it, they played it more often.
