The fishing "lobby" is quite powerful on LI and have been quite vocal with the public on this "issue". We as lifeguards have a vested interest in being allowed to surf at state parks and personally I've always found it ridiculous that you can be ticketed just for having a board in your 4x4 at certain spots. Surfrider is apparently involved but i was wondering if the union/JBLC has anything to say considering that we have come close to losing access in the past.

I am a member of Surfrider Central LI. I have been involved in successful negotiations with parks regarding the expansion of surfing rights within the state parks system. The fishing lobby has long been opposed to surfing rights on LI. Right now one of the hot spots is on the north side of Montauk point. Surfing is not allowed, and the fish lobby wants to keep it that way. Gilgo Beach State Park now has limited surfing and vehicle use rights. I am not sure as to whether this is an attempt to ban surfing at all LI beaches, or just a select few. Contacting Surfrider CLI might be the best thing to do. The web address is http://www.surfridercli.org/. I have been a liaison/contact between the two groups, but the union and surfrider do not have any official relationship. Thanks for bringing up this issue. Let me know what you find out. Tom Donovan
