The first document posted is the policy statement issued at the end of the 1963 lifeguarding season by Long Island State Park Commision President Perry B. Duryea. It came about prior to a threatened lifeguard strike based on pay in late August of that year. The LISPC negotiated with Lawrence J. Byrne and the lifeguard representatives through their repesentative Daniel Kehoe. The pay issue would be revisted each season till 1967 when it took an 8 day strike to finally address and get the negotiated pay raises authorized by the state.
The second document was a hand written list of all the benifits gained through organizing under Local 381 of the SEIU or Service Employees Internation Union of the AFL-CIO. The locals president was Lawrence J. Byrne and the lifeguard president was Walter Schurr. This document is from around 1966 and shows what we had gained in four seasons. I also have an about 12 page document that constituted our first formal contract showing the issues of that time period at the beach. I'll try and get it scanned and posted here on the site for all our members.
