The Chief was advertising jobs for lifeguards for New York city at Rockaway and Coney Island and other NY city parks paying $12.50 per hour. They have 1,200 guards working the season. We have 485 guards. The Blue Angels show is scheduled for Memorial Dad Weekend. Has anyone seen a copy of the NYSCOPBA 2003-2007 contract? I think a call or letter to NYSCOPBA by all lifeguards for a copy of the most recent contract would be smart. Maybe some calls to our ChIef Sector Steward Tim Forsyth would be in order. I'll post his number. Contact NYSCOPBA via their website. We're in Law Enforcement. Might as well get our "dues" worth of service. Did anyone get the $50 dollar gift card?

adam your right no one cares about lifeguards until its 90 degrees hazy hot and humid...
we work our asses off and no one cares...
hello dude...we have not had a contract for four years plus...so your gonna tell me they care in the summer...
no one cares...no one cares...
WELL LETS MAKE THEM CARE...now is the time...not may not july...
now...we wait until nysut and the summer...we kiss another season bye bye...

ive called the union reps...ive called tim...july 2007...union reps blamed situation on old EB...tim was clueless on everything...said "the jb guys push all the buttons"

the bottom line is we are there for the patrons...the people who make jb happen...money wise...they should know about our situation...the press should be contacted...told about our situation with no contract...throw nyscopba in...throw spitzer and bruno in...and we can tell them we contacted steve fuscillo and he said sorry boys cant help...turn his screws a bit...

common people...so many options...be we sit and wait...we wait for another day...turns into weeks...next its months...and we wait...and wait..and wait...next...

how many years has it been since we had a contract...

I was just advising you that going to the press would be a mistake right now. When people start going to the beach in the summer, then they might care about lifeguards. But you have to be smart about getting the press involved. You call in the press and they are likely to side with the state because the lifeguard salaries are higher than the average salary for city lifeguards and the rest of the NYS lifeguards. And, frankly, with all the talk of recession and foreclosures the average person might not be very sympathetic to the lifeguards. What we have going for us is the fact that we have a history of unionization, that we're organized, unlike the rest of the lifeguards in the state. Organization is the way to get things done, and that means being patient and going through the NYSUT lawyers and negotiating with PERB and all that other crap.

Adam;
I don't think going to the Press can be a problem. We're aware of the situation, but the general public isn't. I mentioned NY city starting salaries as on par with Jones Beach, but plenty of New York city guards make way more than the Jones Beach guards, and they have a bona fide collective bargaining agreement that covers just lifeguards.

We're one page in an 80 page contract for NYSCOPBA. Simply stating our situation would create public sympathy toward our cause. It might actually help us get a decision before the summer starts. It would definitely let the public know we are not happy with our situation. We need a change, NYSCOPBA isn't doing thier job, and the DFR is putting the STATE and NYSCOPBA on notice in Nassau Supreme court.

If one paper gets the story wrong or skews it to make us look bad, I can't see how? Then we go to another. The NY Times was happy to run that story about anti semitism, maybe someone over their would be interested in writing a story on the labor situation concerning New York State Lifeguards. Couldn't hurt, and this way we can begin educating the public, and also educating our members as to the current situation at the beach.

We're not talking speed suits or jammers or the third try at the 1 minute 20 second rehire test. We're talking being missrepresented for years by Council 82 and now NYSCOPBA. We're talking patiently working for 6 seasons with out a raise, and then having NYSCOPBA settle a contract that completely ignores lifeguard pay and retro. We're talking about finally getting a written collective bargaining agreement, I'm still waiting for the current Executive Board to look through our records and find out when we had our last written collective bargaining agreement.

I'm still waiting to see a copy of the current NYSCOPBA contract for 2003-2007 that I heard doesn't have the appendex that includes lifeguards. I'm hoping Bruce Mierowitz or Tommy Donovan can get a copy of it from NYSCOPBA. I think they did get their $50 gift cards.

That all seems reasonable enough. If that doesn't work we can get the native americans to claim Jones Beach as their ancestral homeland and build a casino with the help of Donald Trump that way we can get our retro pay. I don't know if that helps.

It didn't work for the Shinecock Indians, but I think the odds are about the same as getting the pay raise and retro through NYSCOPBA!

reasonable enough...funny id put money on that as opposed to the reasons why we DONT go to the press...its winter time...good god...
all those examples of why we should go to the press and the only reason not to...its winter time...its cold...no one cares....recession...
we cant go to the press the price of oil is over 100$ a barrel...
good fuckin god...

another good reason we should go to the press...
the lifeguard corp would be informed about the situation...like you adam...they would get their questioned answered...we all could learn a lot from what the article would say...the writer could contact certain members from nyscopba and ask them direct questions concerning our future...the contact list goes miles long...

by the way...adam...here is my take on the trump on the water...just so you know where im coming from...what lines i think on...
trump at jones beach huge eye sore...logically makes no sense...however...an eating establishment at jb makes lots of sense...so whats the easiest way to build it...get trump in who can do whatever he wants...attitude and money wise...he is able to bypass all the permits...the state has no right to tell donald how to build his catering hall...he will do it his way...now watch two years before its completion...the rights are sold to some other catering company...name may stay the same...until people get used to the idea...then...we have the jb restaurant...no trump...no indians...no pay raise and retro...
no contract...no lifeguards???

Maybe all the other guards are fine with no retro pay and no raises? With a recesion coming why risk our steady $15 an hour gig? If people are tightening their belts, they'll most likely begin coming back to Jones Beach instead of flying off to some exotic vacation. Beaches will most likely be crowded. Who knows what the Surf forcast for the summer will be. Big Water, Sunny Weather, Big Crowds used to mean Big Rescues. What will the bottom be like? Rip Currents, sand bars, shelfs, cuts; Maybe there will be another Summer of the Governors Medal?

The squeaky wheel gets the grease, or is everyone happy with the Status Quo?
