We are open again this weekend!! Parks has decided to hire limited lifeguard coverage for the Columbus Day Weekend, including Monday. Guards will be in place at JB Field 6, RM5, Sunken Meadow, and Hither Hills. The number of guards hired is very low, and the method of who is hired is debatable, but it is a step in the right direction. Parks felt that with the continuing warm weather, warm water, and attendance, that opening the ocean and sound to swimming was the way to go. In the past, state workers on quads and trucks would keep patrons out of the water, an inefficient and negative method of serving the public. Formulating policy that recognizes that the public enjoys swimming after mid September and not totally based on weather predictions, should be a future priority for the Parks Department.
But, we are working and it sets a good precident, so I say thanks to those that made this possible, and to those who are working, have a great weekend!

Holiday pay is one of the things that has been in our contract with Council 82, and since 1999 with NYSCOPBA. We used to get 2 of 3 holidays, but now get all three holidays we work. They are listed as Memorial Day, Fourth of July, and Labor Day, and it states you need to work 160 hours before they will be paid. Columbus day is not a listed holiday, but if Tom Donovan can negotiate the payment he'll be delivering more than we've seen in the last several years. Great job Tom!

iF YOU CAN THAT WOULD BE GREAT. gREAT JOB BY ALL INVOLVED. wE WOULDN'T WANT TO SET A PRECEDENT THAT WE ARE WILLING TO WORK HOLIDAYS WITHOUT HOLIDAY PAY. i DO REALIZE IT MAY HAVE BEEN A LONG TIME SINCE ANYONE HAS GUARDED THIS LATE INTO A SEASON. tOM KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK LIKE ROONEY SAID JUST GETTING PEOPLE WORKING SEEMS LIKE A HUGE STEP IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION BOTH FOR US AND A HUGE ONE FOR THE STATE SEEING THE NEED AND ACTUALLY ADDRESSING IT WITH A GOOD DECISION.

Here's the wording from the contract, it looks like we've entered a new seasonal period, the first is from 4/1 to 9/30, and the next is from 10/1 to 3/31. Maybe that would qualify for another 3 holidays?

"Employees who work at least 160 hours during the season (at least 20 days) will be entitled to additional compensation at their hourly rate, up to a maximum of eight hours, for time worked on each of the first three (3) days during their employment in any seasonal period (4/1 to 9/30 and 10/1 to 3/31) which are observed as holidays by the State. Such compensation should be paid retroactively upon completion of five weeks of work."

Taken from the 1999-2004 NYSCOPBA contract found at the GOER website.
