New York city parks are looking to fill their 1,200 spots

Their Union is DC37 of AFSCME with 2 locals representing lifeguards;

Local 508 - Lifeguard Supervisors: pres.- Peter Stein has about 100 members.

Local 461 - NYC Lifeguards: pres.- Franklyn Paige has about 1,100 members.

They patrol 14 miles of beaches with 7 ocean facilities, and 53 outdoor pools.

Starting lifeguards make $11.72 per hour and work a 6 day 48 hour week.

2nd year guards make $13.50 an hour, and 3rd year guards make $15.17 an hour.

Test consists of swims of 440 yards in 6 minutes and 40 seconds; and 50 yards in 35 seconds.

Other municipalities out there that Employ lifeguards are Nassau County; Suffolk County; Breezy Point Cooperative, inc.; TOBAY; Town of Hempstead;Village of Saltaire; Village of Ocean Beach;Town of Islip; Town of Babylon; Town of Smithtown; Town of Brookhaven; Town of East Hampton; Town of Southhampton.

Would be interesting to get all the pay scales and testing requirements. Last edited by Guest on Mon Jun 11, 2007 5:27 pm, edited 1 time in total.

Mark;
How many years has he been there? How many Guards work there? What's starting pay and how many steps? Do they have Captains and boatswains? Are they in a union? See what info you can find out, then we'll have some idea what the other municipalities do, and where we stand in the group.
See you wednesday night at the meeting; Rooney

Rooney,

I worked for the Town of Hempstead for 8 years and still have a few contacts there. Lifeguard pay ranges from $9 and change for first year lifeguard up to $15 and change for Captains. I do not have exact figures yet. They have an increase in pay after year 2. their positions include:
Lifeguard
Senior guard
Lt.
Senior Lt.
Captain
Supervisor.

All promotions are done by supervisors not seniority it is a subjective process. personal opinions play a large role. I believe their is some difference in pay for beach and pool guards or at least their used to be.

He has been there awhile but LT. pay is not based on time. Lifeguards make over 20 something and they are the highest paid. They are not unioized and have a captain, LT. and boatswain. It is similar to ours but not the same amount of officers.
They have the same sit situation but better, basically officers and senior guards rarely sit and they never sit more then 3 maybe 4 times as a new lifeguard.
I have not spoken to him lately, but can find that out. Even their pool lifeguards make more then most of our officers.
Due to our crowds, caliber of lifeguards and retesting it is obvious we should be paid the most but that is a mute argument at this point.

Do you know how many guards work in Long Beach? What do they make? Ranks? Let's stick with a compilation of Stats so we see where we fit in the big scheme of things. That way we know where we can make gains.
See you tommorrow night; Jim
